2/7/2024 0 Comments Jameis winston allegationsBefore home football games, the men at Rhodes College dress up in suits, parade across campus, walk to their promised land, to our promised land: the football field. So why are these men not held accountable? Why are star football players, men who not only little boys, but also little girls, look up to as role models, not punished for committing something so serious as sexual assault?Įvery day I watch football players walk around a Division Three school like they own the place. Schools grant their star football players a special leniency regarding sexual assault, and it keeps me up at night. But then I thought, how can I be sure there is not someone out there who has been sexually assaulted by one of the Clemson football players I look up to? How can I be sure Clemson has not just covered every assault up? Our Title IX can only charge a student with rape if there was intent behind the assault, which means that not all perpetrators of sexual assault can be punished by their schools. I was met with a Title IX board at Clemson, and no allegations against Deshaun Watson. I googled ‘Deshaun Watson sexual assault’ to see if he had any accusations against him. I googled ‘Clemson sexual assault’ hoping that Clemson would be doing something to kill this culture that allows star football players to lack responsibility and accountability for their actions. How am I, a 20-year-old woman in college, supposed to watch this game that brings me so much joy with a good conscience when there are countless men who have not been held accountable for their horrific actions? This is what I began to question when I googled Jameis Winston and had to see him living his life as freely as he wanted to. However, this insane passion football fans have is a part of the problem. Every single time, I freak out, texting him back in all caps because these football players are people I love. Every time my brother walks by a football player at Clemson, he texts me without fail. I honestly would die for Deshaun Watson, who was the Clemson quarterback in 2016 and is now the Houston Texans’ starting quarterback. I have been a Cowboys fan since I came out of the womb, recently getting more and more involved in watching the NFL. I’ve attended two out of the past three College Football National Championship games. I lose my mind during the College Football Playoffs. Every time Clemson has a game on, I watch, and I scream. The second headline? ‘Jameis Winston driver releases statement after alleged sexual assault.’ The bastard did it again. He roundabout admitted to assaulting one of his Uber drivers, but was only suspended for three games with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. This does not pay for the trauma that Jameis Winston caused, and that the victim will never be able to forget. This would pay for about 12 students' tuitions for four years at Florida State University. It is an ESPN article explaining that Florida State paid the victim $950,000 to settle the lawsuit she filed 4 years before this payment against Florida State for how they handled her sexual assault. ‘Jameis Winston settles lawsuit with 2012 sexual assault accuser’ is the first headline. Of course, rather than bringing me some solace that people were at least acknowledging the fact that this ‘God’ of a quarterback is also a rapist, the article headlines that show up only left me with my jaw dropped. These headlines popped up: “Bucs are fine with Jameis Winston gaining weight, if it’s good weight,” “Tampa Bay Bucanneers trade Jameis Winston to Cincinnatti,” and “Jameis Winston: A&M has ‘the best facilities in the world.’” I had never even heard of this man aside from his status as the starting quarterback for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and not a single thing about sexual assault popped up on google when I looked up his name. So I tried, ‘Jameis Winston sexual assault’ instead. I started researching Jameis Winston after the film. I felt like I was on fire when I watched this. ![]() In fact, the movie went on to say he led his team to a National Championship title in 2013, won the Heisman as a Freshman quarterback and became the Number 1 NFL Draft pick in 2015 at the age of twenty years old. ![]() Last week, Culture of Consent presented a showing of “The Hunting Ground,” a documentary about sexual assault on college campuses. The part that suck out most to me was when a student at Florida State University accused the star quarterback of Florida State, Jameis Winston, of sexual assault and he was never punished for it.
